Five brands.
One system.
Zero compromises.

Multibrand Home Charging App — UX Lead, Volkswagen Group

Every app should feel like it's the only one.

The challenge

Five Group brands wanted five apps of their own for charging at home, but only one system behind them. Sounds like a contradiction. Was the brief anyway.

The real question was this: how do you build a functional logic that looks five different ways and feels five different ways, yet only needs to be maintained once?

The approach

Nine people, one team, full ownership of UX, UI and research, plus the central point of contact for the product leads across all five brands.

Instead of starting from zero five times, we first asked what the core actually was. Start a charging session. Check charging status. Control the wallbox. Review history. We designed these flows once, built to work for all five brands.

Then came the real work, namely the difference in the details. Bottom drawer or popup. Which button hierarchy fits which brand. How much overlay a brand can carry before it stops feeling like itself. Font sizes that carry character, not just legibility. Out of these questions grew a pattern system, the shared foundation that let every brand keep speaking its own language.

The process.

Let the numbers do the talking

The outcome.
